Joe Taslim (birthname: Johannes Taslim) is an Indonesian Chinese martial arts actor of international renown, making a big splash in international genre moviemaking in his third movie, director/writer Gareth Evans’ wildly received Indonesian action thriller, The Raid (2011), co-starring Iko Uwais, Donny Alamsyah and Yayah Ruhian, premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, and delivering a profitable (based on estimated costs) $9.3 million return for Sony Pictures Classics (U.S.)/Kadokawa Pictures (Japan)/SND HGC (China)/Koch Media (Germany)/Alliance Films (Canada)/Momentum Pictures (U.K.)/Madman Entertainment (Australia)/Calinos Films (Turkey); Taslim appeared in an uncredited cameo in the sequel, The Raid 2 (2014).
Taslim made his Hollywood debut in the cast of the Justin Lin-directed franchise sequel, Fast & Furious 6 (2013), co-starring Vin Diesel (who also was a lead producer), Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Sung Kang, Luke Evans, Gina Carano and John Ortiz, and which grossed over $788 million globally for distributor and lead producer Universal Pictures.
Taslim co-starred in the Indonesian Japanese drama, La Tahzan (2013), co-starring Ario Bayu and Atiqah Hashiholan under Daniel Rifki’s direction, and then Taslim returned to Hollywood to appear in another Justin Lin-directed franchise sequel, Star Trek Beyond (2016), co-starring Chris Pine (as Capt. Kirk), Zachary Quinto (as Dr. Spock), Simon Pegg (who co-wrote with Doug Jung), Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella, produced by Lin, J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Lindsey Weber, and which grossed $343.5 million worldwide for distributor and lead producer Paramount Pictures. Taslim co-starred with Bunga Citra Lestari in director/story writer Fajar Bustomi’s Indonesian drama, A Note to God (2017), adapted by Upi Avianto from Agnes Davonar’s novel, and which was released theatrically in Indonesia by GSC Movies and on streaming worldwide by Netflix.
Joe Taslim led the cast of the Indonesian movie, Hit & Run (2019), co-starring Chandra Liow, Jefri Nichol, Tatjana Saphira, and Reza Aditya under Ody C. Harahap’s direction and produced by (among others) Korea-based CJ Entertainment. Taslim co-starred in his first South Korean period action movie, director/writer Choi Jae-hoon’s The Swordsman (2020), with Jang Hyuk, Kim Hyun-soo and Jung Man-sik, produced and distributed by Opus Pictures, and then Taslim took on the role of Bi-Han in Warner Bros. Pictures/New Line Cinema’s franchise video game series revival, Mortal Kombat (2021), co-starring Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano and Hiroyuki Sanada under Simon McQuoid’s direction, and grossing $84.4 million; Taslim continued in the role for the sequel also directed by McQuoid, Mortal Kombat II (2026), with new cast members Karl Urban and Adeline Rudolph joining the original cast, and grossing over $120 million for distributor Warner Bros. Pictures.
Taslim joined co-star Mo Tse in the English-language Hong Kong action movie, The Furious (2026), with Jeeja Yanin, Brian Le, and Yayan Ruhian under Kenji Tanigaki’s direction, co-written and produced (in part) by Frank Hui, backed by Edko Films/Zhejiang Hengdian Film/XYZ Films, and released wide by Lionsgate Films (International)/Edko Films (Hong Kong).

Joe Taslim was born and raised in Palemberg, Indonesia, by his parents, who are of Chinese descent. Taslim is trained in Wushu, Taekwondo, and Judo. Taslim has been married to his wife, Julia, since 2004; the couple has three children. Taslim’s height is 5’ 11”.
